SFMTA Board Votes to Reduce Car-Free Hayes to 2 Days Per Week

At the SFMTA Board Meeting on Oct 17, the board voted to reduce the Fri/Sat/Sun Hayes Street Shared Spaces program to Fri/Sat. The agenda item called for reducing it to Saturday-only, but thanks to all the public support, including a surprise appearance by District Supervisor Dean Preston, Director Manny Yekutiel proposed an amendment to the agenda item to reduce the program to 2 days rather than 1. This is a half-victory, we have more work to do.

On the plus side, the board, and Director Tumlin, were all in agreement of our second request, to ask SFMTA staff to design a process to fully pedestrian a street. This aligns our long-term goal of a 24/7 fully-pedestrianized Hayes Street.

This amended Fri/Sat program still needs to be voted on at the Nov 7 Board meeting. Stay tuned for calls-to-action on that meeting.
