Call-to-action: Final hurdle for Hayes Promenade permit renewal

TL;DR: Our final hurdle for permit renewal is this Tuesday, November 19th, 2024. Click here to send public comment to SFMTA showing your support for continuing Hayes Promenade. (Nov 19 update: SFMTA Board unanimously passed, with an expansion to include Saturday mornings! Thanks to everyone who supported!)

Subject: Item 13: Approve our 3-day Hayes Street Shared Space

I am writing in support of the Hayes Street Shared Space. Since 2020, this program has created a vibrant town square in the middle of Hayes Valley, for neighbors and visitors alike. From neighborhood events, to holiday parties, to art walks, to simply creating a safe space for folks of all backgrounds to enjoy the street, this program has been a success.

The Hayes Street Shared Space is bordered on two sides by Fell/Oak and Franklin/Gough. Opening up the street for people creates a calm, safe environment in a neighborhood that shoulders an outsized burden of vehicular traffic.

I am also in support of restoring the previous 3-day schedule, with earlier start times, and Sunday. These are essential times both for events to leverage, and for people to enjoy the space.

Thank you for your time.

We cleared our first hurdle with ISCOTT last month. For those that emailed their support, thank you! This upcoming SFMTA Board meeting is the final hurdle to get our permit renewed for a full year.

We’re asking SFMTA to expand the schedule to include Sundays, and start earlier on weekend days. This is basically the schedule we had from 2020 through 2023, and we’re hoping to restore it.

You can help in two ways:

1) Click here to send an email in support of the Hayes Street Shared Space. It must be received by noon on Monday Nov 18th.

2) Come to the meeting and provide public comment in person, Tuesday, November 19th, 4pm, City Hall, Room 400:
https://www.sfmta.com/calendar/board-directors-meeting-november-19-2024 (The meeting starts at 1pm, but our Agenda Item 13 won’t be heard before 4pm. I recognize giving public comment in-person is a much heavier lift for folks, but they are extremely valuable).

Streets are for people!
